The area around the lagoon makes for a pleasant wander, especially in the early morning or at sunset when the birdlife is spectacular. There is a tiny harbour and you will often see fishermen in small boats in the lagoon. Mouse Island, with its tiny chapel, joined to Corfu by a narrow causeway, is perhaps the most famous image of Corfu.

Corfu Airport

Corfu Airport is situated just to the south of Corfu Town and is one of the bigger island airports in Greece, dealing with over a million visitors every year. Most people visit Corfu on a package tour but there are an increasing number of independent travellers who pick up a Corfu airport car hire to get to their destination.

The rather short runway of Corfu is a spectacular arrival as you fly low over the Halkiopoulos Lagoon. The lagoon is very rich in wildlife, flourishing in the waters and the surrounding reed beds.

The lagoon has ironically been spared development due to the proximity of Corfu airport and is home to rare White Egrets and families of otters.
