Things to do in Corfu Town
If you are visiting in a car hire, you will need to park up; Corfu Town is definitely best explored on foot as much of the town is pedestrianised. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare so you are best heading for one of Corfu Town’s car parks and there are numerous traffic wardens around Corfu Town these days.
Things to see in Corfu Town
Corfu Town has two fortresses. The imaginatively Old Fortress dates back to the tenth century, perched precariously above the ocean. Residents of Corfu Town lived inside this fortress from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century. Climb up for some amazing views across Corfu Town and up to the twin peaks of Mount Pandokrator in north Corfu. As Corfu Town grew and the Old Fortress crumbled, work began in 1577 to build a new fortress to house the people of Corfu Town and protect them from growing attacks from Turkish pirates. Take some time to explore the many steps and tunnels of the citadel as well as commanding views from the ramparts over Corfu Town.
Close to the Old Fortress, the cool colonnaded walkway of the Liston was modelled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, hence the distinctively European feel. In the past, only the top families of Corfu were permitted to walk under the arches but today you can pull up a chair and enjoy a drink of Ginger beer and look out to Corfu’s only cricket pitch, both throwbacks from the British occupation of Corfu. One of Corfu Town’s major car parks can be found here and it is a good place to park you car hire.
There are numerous museums in Corfu Town, but two of particular note are the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, with its gigantic 6th century BC frieze of the gorgon Medusa and the Solomos Museum with its grand portraits and fine collection of vintage photographs.

Corfu Town is perhaps the grandest capital of any Greek island, with its maze of tiny backstreets and gimcrack alleys opening periodically onto grand squares and esplanades.Corfu Town owes its heritage to a succession of invaders; its tall shuttered buildings and narrow streets to the Venetians; its grand esplanades, colonnaded walkways and weathered marble pavements to the French and its grand palaces, parks and even its cricket pitch to the English.
If you are visiting Corfu, at least one trip to Corfu Town is a must. However, the town is so charming and there is so much to see that you may find yourself returning again and again or even staying in Corfu Town.
